Ducks can't solve Beast

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks just can't break the spell of the New Haven Beast. The teams have played four times and four times the Ducks have failed to win.
Florida Panthers prospect Chris Allen scored a power-play goal in the second period and set up another to lead the Beast past the Ducks, 3-1, Wednesday at the New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Dwayne Hay and Ryan Johnson also scored goals for New Haven (31-29-5-7), which improved to 3-0-0-1 all-time against the Mighty Ducks.
Beast goalie Mike Fountain continued to be red hot, winning for the sixth time in New Haven's last seven games with a 29-save effort.
Allen's goal came when the hard-shooting rookie defenseman blasted a slapshot from high in the slot past Ducks goalie Jamie Ram for his seventh goal of the season with New Haven enjoying a 5-on-3 power-play advantage to give the Beast a 2-0 lead.
Igor Nikulin scored his 17th goal of the season in the second period for the Ducks, who are 2-4-0-0 with two games to go on a season-long eight-game road trip and dropped to 32-36-1-4.
'(New Haven) is a desperate hockey team right now battling for a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference,' Ducks coach Moe Mantha said. 'Every point is important to them. They're in a big dogfight and they came ready to play and got another good game out of (Fountain).'
