The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they were ending their two-year affiliation with the New Haven Beast of the American Hockey League.
The National Hockey League team said it would be affiliated with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the International Hockey League for at least the next three years.
Under the agreement, Carolina will place 11 of its minor league players on the squad each season.
Talks to renew the relationship fell through over the weekend, The New Haven Register reported today. According to the report, Beast General Manager David Gregory had until Monday to work out a deal.
The announcement means Paragon Sports, which runs the Beast, will have to shut down for next season and seek a new affiliation for the 2000-1 season.
The decision also ends one of the last remaining connections between the Hurricanes and Connecticut. The franchise was the Hartford Whalers for 20 years before moving to North Carolina in 1997.
