Section 102 Honors Danbury Whaler Forward
Whaler Fans from Section 102 present their Impact Player of the Year Award for 2010-2011
Danbury, CT, February 25, 2011: In a presentation ceremony prior to faceoff this evening, The Section 102 Impact Player of the Year Award was given to Danbury Whalers forward Alec Kirschner at center ice of the buzzing Danbury Arena. Section 102 representatives, Dennis “Big D Cats” Cartalano, Anthony “Baloo” Raemdonck, Steve “Jackass” Swain, and Mike “Mikey V” Velluto presented Kirschner a trophy to commemorate the achievement. Kirschner’s name was also added to the perpetual trophy alongside those of past award winners.
“Alec was an immediate impact player,” Cartalano said, “from his first game you could see that he was the type of player that could show up in the offensive zone out of the blue and waffle the puck into the net.”
According to Raemdonck and Velluto, the voting this season was the closest in the history of the award, with seven Whalers players nominated by the fans for the honor. Kirschner’s stats for the 2010-2011 campaign speak for themselves, and pushed the crafty center to the top of the list. In just 16 games with the Whalers, Kirschner has tallied 38 points on 21 goals and 17 assists. He leads the team with a +25 rating, and has scored the game winning goal in a quarter of the games that he has appeared in.
The Section 102 award has its origins in New Haven, reported Swain, with fans from the late New Haven Memorial Coliseum’s Section 14 continuing a tradition. He notes that they brought the award over from Section 14 and that the fans from Section 102 have carried on the New Haven tradition by funding, voting for, and presenting the award every season that professional hockey has been played in Danbury. Past award winners were Kenzie Homer (New Haven Knights), Blair Allison (New Haven Knights), Bruce Richardson (Danbury Trashers), JM Daoust (Danbury Trashers), and Obi Aduba (Danbury Mad Hatters).
